Replacing a J with a P: Honest Input Needed

BoH's picture

I want to replace a Jazz pickup with P pickup in my Spector. I've heard some suggestions and I simply can't afford them right now (thanks Rog and Mo). I do have a P-bass pickup (thanks again Rog and Mo) that I can use for the project.

The problem is in the look of the bass. If I route for a P pickup then the J route will show and really ugly up what I think is a great looking bass. I want so badly to use this bass because of the feel and weight but the EMGHz pups just sound awful to my ear (weak and thin).

So my thought is this: if I can put the P in and fashion a nice looking bezel (I have the material) to cover the J hole, I can use my EMG Select P, (which is nice and beefy) in the Spector. Confused? I hope not.

I need your thoughts. Be honest.

Thanks,

Bo

I can't offer any advice.

I can't offer any advice. So I'll just wish you luck and demand before and after pics. Seems like the whole thing hinges on how nice a bezel you can make. But I'd prefer a bass I like to play to a pretty one that I don't bother to play because I don't like the sound. And that seems to be your thinking, too.

Too bad there's not a decent P-ish pickup that'll fit that J slot. Ever consider pulling out the guts of the PU and seeing if you can fit it into a J-style housing? I'm not sure if that's even possible.

I'm actually watching a T40

I'm actually watching a T40 pickup on Ebay right now. It might be the one if I can win it. It's not a P pickup, but it IS a T pickup so it automatically qualifies for greatness...Haha!

Bezel

Bo,

The best part about making a bezel is it's not permanent. You are good at this so what do you have to leose but some time. I bet 99% of the folks wouln't even notice....until you point it out (the curse of the luthier, you have to tell).
