Ukulele

wheat's picture

I have a friend at work who is a Ukulele freak and loaned me a little soprano uke and an instructional DVD. I've been having fun learning chords and playing silly songs. I though a ukulele might be nice for entertaining Haden, as it's easy to move around, quiet, and high pitched. He seems to really dig it. I've been entertaining him with "Froggie went a Courtin'" and a bunch of other kid songs.

Me to

I have wanted to by a mandolin for a long time. When B# and I were up at Levin Helm's barn, he played mandolin when he wasn't drumming... very cool. Have you ever seen the electric mandolin that looks like a tiny Thunderbird bass?

I'm the same way with a mandolin. I like the sound, but the scale is too short for me. Luckily, with the ukulele, if the regular/soprano (13" scale) one doesn't work for you they also come in concert (15"), tenor (17"), and baritone (19") scale sizes. Still pretty small when you're used to the 34" of a long-scale bass, of course. :)

That would be a blast. If

That would be a blast. If you play any guitar at all, the ukulele is very quick to pick up. I've got my major chords pretty much down and am now working on my Dominant 7 chords. I have a nice chord grid that my uke-crazy friend made me with major, minor, maj7, min7, dominant7, diminished, and a few others laid out very nicely. I need to do something similar for the bass book.

I also have a DVD that covers strumming patterns and such. I haven't gotten to that yet.

For anyone interested, this

For anyone interested, this site has a great chord chart for (soprano and baritone) ukulele: http://www.alligatorboogaloo.com/uke/chords/chords-ADFB.html. I play mine in "D" tuning (A, D, F#, B). Sopranos are generally tuned to D or C (same chart for C tuning). They use something called "reentrant" tuning. The A string is actually higher than the D and F#, sort of like playing a five-string banjo.

The intervals between the strings are the same as for the highest four strings on a guitar. So a lot of the shapes are familiar, even if they represent different chords (e.g. the D major shape is an A major chord in D tuning or a G chord in C tuning).

I've been learning the major chords systematically, which is odd for me. I tend to pick up things here and there. I need to take this systematic approach to improve my guitar chord mojo. :)

Sounds like fun! I've decided to learn mandolin this year and picked up a modestly priced one on eBay. Now that tax season is behind me I should be able to spend some time on it, what I've learned so far has been fun (it's like a bass strung backwards - it's tuned in 5th rather than 4ths)
