I can highly recommend Band
I can highly recommend Band in a Box from pgmusic. BiaB can play songs without bass (or any instrument). There are thousands of songs available. It can also play midi files. There are tens of thousands of those. In addition it can generate originals, in any of thousands of styles, on the fly.
The newest version has RealDrums. These are recorded drum tracks synchronised to the midi tracks. RD increase the realism by orders of magnitude.
There are hundreds of other features. You can record audio to an audio track. You can record midi to a midi track. You can export a composition to audio or midi. There's a bass guitar window which lets you see what the current bass is playing. There's notation and tab. Check the web site for more details.
You can download a trial version if you want to try it out. If you decide to purchase I recommend the MegaPak version as it has more goodies like more drum styles etc.
Hope this is helpful.

Have a look through this
Have a look through this thread Digital Recording 101
It tells how to plug into the PC.
The easiest way is to get a Line 6 TonePort GX for 50$. PLug it in and yer off and playing through the pc.

Hazz and Paul have good
Hazz and Paul have good advice for you. There are lots of USB and Firewire audio interfaces you can use to get the signal of your bass into your computer. I really like the TonePort UX2 (see my review of it). But there are cheaper options (in the TonePort line and elsewhere).
BTW, GearBox (the software that controls the TonePort) has a feature that lets you play along with mp3s and other audio files, set loop points to zero in on difficult passages, adjust the level of your bass relative to the level of the mp3, and cut the tempo by half w/o lowering the pitch (it's not great at that, but it's there). It also has a built-in metronome/drum machine that you can use for practice, a built-in tuner, and a lot of other practice-friendly features.
Your bass + a computer + a TonePort + a set of headphones and you have a decent practice setup. Make it a laptop and you have a mobile project studio. It's way more fun, much higher quality, and not much more expensive than the crappy cassette-based 4-track + drum machine setup I had back in the early 90s (in real dollars, it's probably cheaper).
Welcome to BPing!
