Wheat said:"Keep believing what the cigarette manufacturers, their lobbyists, and their hired-gun scientists want you to believe, Dave. It took them until about 2005 to admit that cigarettes aren't good for you. It'll take 'em until 3010 to admit that second-hand smoke is dangerous."
I found that statement aggravating. I have poured through more information on BOTH sides than I care to think about. I was done with it after our last discussion on it. You should know me well enough to know after we both had our say I tend to inject some humor into it after the fact. Hell I didn't even get to any smartass comments yet. I think you and I are pretty close on this thing. I told you before I like where your head's at on it. Am I missing something?
I don't like how this thing is going. I hear a lot of non-smokers say they are glad for the smoking ban but didn't like how it came about. It's not just smokers speaking against the ban. Here's a non-smoker that worked in air filtration that lost his job due to a smoking ban. The thing I like about this guy is he backs up what he's saying with documentation. Not the same old "I'm an expert take my word for it" mentality. cleanairquality.blogspot.com Want some more good reading? Try joejackson.com Download his ebooklet, it's worth the read. I have quoted Joe numerous times.
As for my website pacleanairpromise.com I think I've been more than fair about it. I have a page with the Surgeon General Warning on second had smoke. I didn't hide it, or dispute it, or doctor it. It's the Surgeon General’s press release. How many opposing the smoking bans have the balls to give time to the other side? Furthermore, I have a page called "Both Sides" in which compelling arguments are made from both positions. Also listed is the PA Senate Bill. Now all that being said, do I have an agenda? Your damn right I do! My whole future is at stake. But, rather than try to fight the ban outright. I've come up with a compromise that given a chance just may work. I'm not going to tell you or anyone else ALL the things I have in mind. I wouldn't post that on the web and give my competition insight into my plans.
I actually enjoy discussing this here. Sure beats some of the smoking forums I go to. Most people are middle of the road, but there are extremists on both sides. It’s a real shame when smokers are getting stabbed, shot, and their asses kicked just for the simple fact that they smoke. And they call me a “killer”.

Yeah, things would just run smoother if EVERYONE did what I told them too and not followed their own thoughts and ideas. Things would be soooo simple.

If I aggravated you with my
If I aggravated you with my snark in the earlier post, Dave, I hereby apologize for it. I only meant it as a jibe, and one geared at the fear, uncertainty, and doubt initiated and spread by big tobacco, not at you personally.
Your clean-air/anti- smoking-ban initiative seems reason-based. I don't suspect you of any agenda other than your stated one, to allow smoking in bars so long as reasonable efforts at filtration are in place to reduce risk to acceptable levels.
I think you and I are pretty close on this thing, in that we both want a reason-based solution. I personally don't smoke and avoid smoke when I can. I keep my kid away from it. And my wife is far more sensitive to it than I am. So I do have a dog in the fight. But I'm for as much personal liberty as can be allowed without putting others needlessly at risk (on this issue and most any other, for that matter).
So, I'm sorry for the snarky comment. I think it came off wrong. And I didn't intend to imply anything pejorative about your crusade. I say in all seriousness: rock on, Dave and smoke 'em if you got 'em. I'm a homebody anyway. What do I care? If you come over to my place, you'll have to smoke out on the patio. But that's a good place to have a beer anyway, so there's no harm.
Peace,
Wheat

Oh for God sake’s Wheat
Oh for God sake’s Wheat you don’t owe me an apology. I said “aggravated” not pissed off….LOL! I just don’t like getting tossed under the bus with the cigarette companies. If I took it the wrong way (which it sounds I did) then you have MY apologies.
My guitarist has a Halloween party. I go to this party most of the time. He and his wife are both non-smokers. However, when they have a party they allow smoking in their house. Now I’ll be out on his pouch shivering and he’s told me numerous times I could smoke inside. What the Hell is the difference as there are already ten people in their smoking at any given time anyway. But, still I smoke outside. Not because I feel the second hand smoke is going to kill anyone. I guess it’s just out of respect. So, smoking on the porch is no problem with me Wheat.
Now my friend Brian and I went to Canada. Now if you think I’m going on an 18 hour trip without smoking forget about it! Now if he didn’t want me smoking in his vehicle that’s fine, I’ll drive.
This may be hard to believe but I didn’t come out of the womb, open Heineken with my lighter, and spark up a Marlboro. I WAS a non-smoker. As a non-smoker smoke just never bothered me. I let my smoking friends smoke in my car, and in my home. I only ever complained about it one time when I had two heavy smokers in my car in the winter. It was extremely cold out and both of them smoking at the same time was a bit much. I asked if they could please smoke one at a time. That did aggravate my one friend but I thought it was a reasonable solution.
A few weeks ago I was talking to a friend. I told him a smoking ban would not really alter my life in any great degree. I normally will combine business and pleasure. Someone will call and say they are running low on pool chalk or something. Not a service call their just letting me know they are running low so next time I’m in the area I can drop some off. So, maybe I feel like a Heineken. What I’ll do is take some chalk to the location and sit down and have a few Heinekens. Now if I’m sitting down for one it’s going to be four or five….LOL! Now I might do this twice a week. With a smoking ban I just won’t stay and drink four or five. I’ll just wait until I’m in the area to drop off the chalk. The only other time I really go out much is to meet a friend for drinks or a gig or a date. I smoke on breaks and drink a Heineken. So, I’ll go out to my truck to smoke. I’m looking on the bright side of this thing. I figure I can invite that poor freezing cold smoking woman to my truck for warmth and smoking. You know….. cut one of the weak ones away from the herd….LOL! So, if you add that all up the bars of PA will probably lose about 12 Heinekens a week in sales. It doesn’t seem like a lot but what if there are 10 guys thinking like me (120 beers) a hundred guys (1,200 beers), well you see where I’m heading. I worry over the future of the bars, taverns, and nightclubs.
The tobacco companies don’t have near the money or resources that the pharmaceutical companies, and Government that are driving these bans forward have. I don’t blame Johnson and Johnson for the huge push as the payday for them is tremendous. But, I sure don’t like the tactics being employed.

Every time
Every time I browse this thread I go out to my garage or the porch and smoke... you guys are actually helping me kill myself...lOL
I am extremely conscious of where I smoke.
However, I love smoking while riding my motorcycle... the looks I get from some people are priceless; especially at traffic lights. They are just waiting for me to toss the butt in the street so they can scowl.
I have an ashtray from a cigarette company that is as big as a zippo lighter that I flip open and stick the butt in and drive off with a smile.
well, gotta step outside.
LMAO! What are you trying to
LMAO! What are you trying to say Pete.... that there should be a Magaro ban.....LOL! I use my ashtray in my truck. It's easy to just toss them out the window. But, with just a little effort it's not too awful hard to use an ashtray.
Dave
You could also get some "all
You could also get some "all weather" floor mats or brushed aluminum ones and just let the ashes fall. No searching for a stinkin' try. ;)

Smoking ban in SC going to state Supreme Court
I hate to stoke the fire (pun fully intended) of this debate further, but I thought Dave would be happy to know that the local smoking bans in many South Carolina cities (including Mount Pleasant, where I hang my hat) are being challenged at the state Supreme Court. The legislature has been trying to pass a state ban for the past several years, but now they're waiting to see if the local bans have any legal standing.
