Spector: The Rework

BoH's picture

Hey gang! Got some good news.

Any of you who are familiar with my personal bass world might know that I purchased a Spector Legend a few years ago. I had preamp problems and tried a lot of things to fix it. I ended up using a basic J-bass wiring scheme and made the bass passive.

However, I was discussing possiblities for improvements on this bass with a relative who is a budding moddie and he asked if he could try some ideas with it. Being that I trust his judgement, I said yes and turned it over to him for about two months.

I got it back today. It really sounds great and I'm very happy. Here's the scoop:

Control config: instead of v/v/t, he changed the control to volume/blend/tone/distortion. Yes, a slight distortion/drive circuit is built into the bass courtesy of a Black Ice cap from Stewmac.com.

The bass sports four 250K pots; one of which is a push/pull pot for splitting the rear humbucker for single-coil operation. What is especially unique is the second tone pot. Instead of cutting treble frequencies, it controls the Black Ice cap drive level.

It is NOT a full-blown buzz saw distortion, mind you, but is merely a slight hint of drive to add a little edge to the sound.

The standard tone knob is wired as normal, but instead of a .05mF cap, it has a .1mF cap (metal film, not ceramic) for a larger chunk of treble cut.

So there it is. I'll get some audio samples up ASAP for your critique and input. So far, I'm really enjoying the sound of this bass far more than I did.

In the future, I might add a Seymour Quarter Pounder Jazz V to the neck position for a more ballsy sound. The humbucker in the bridge position gives a nice tone.

Anyway, the bass is unchanged cosmetically, so no point in posting pics.

Yes, it was. There is still

Yes, it was. There is still a bit of hum, but it is more of a single coil thing when I split the 'bucker. I'll probably add some more shielding later, but I'm really not concerned about it because it's not so bad.

I'll get around to some sound clips; hopefully this weekend.

Nice

Sounds like your relative is more than a "budding" moddie.... the mods seem pretty professional to me. But then the biggest mod I've ever done myself, other then do the finish work on my old Wishbass, has been to install straplocks ;)

Sounds great Bo!

Congrats, I like the choices you made!

Griz........ ;)

love to.....

hear some sound samples......

Those mods sound very

Those mods sound very interesting. I especially like the ability to split the humbucker for single coil operation. That's really cool. Also, you should have pretty good tone with the extended treble cut.

Are you going to use it for BassIAB V? You could try single coil with lots of treble cut for that vintage reggae sound. : )

I'll probably use the Spector for BassIAB, I'll try a couple of different setting on the bass to find what I like.
