This is my 15 year old son jamming at a park with his drummer mate. We had driven 2 hours each way to the Conservatorium for a classical double bass audition, and pretty much just got back, before heading to this jam. It was recorded on a digicam by a kid, and it is a bit frenetic but check it out.

You gotta be a proud parent,

You gotta be a proud parent, Spiky. Your kiddo can lay it down. I've never tried to learn a Vic Wooten track note by note. That would probably be a good one, as it's mostly one big groove and a bunch of fills (until it hits the bridges at the end). Your son has a good sense of time. He's dialed in pretty tight with the drummer.

How did the audition go? And why isn't he signed up here and teaching us how to play. :)

Thanks Wheat, yerr, it's a bit of a loose jam, but good fun. We find out about the audition results in a few weeks, he's doing big band and jazz ensemble auditions this Saturday too, ARRGGGHHH! plus a restaurant gig rehearsal today etc. etc. Lotsa driving.

He isn't that much of a computer user, he usually just goes online for myspace and endless perving at basses and tone-woods and top-woods. Sometimes I show him stuff from this site. He loves the project where people send in bass-lines for a progression, but we don't have the technology here for that. (might buy a Behringer usb interface?)

Fat man, fat bass.

Wow

That vid is fun. You're son has some chops. I now have a nice fire going in my yard... los of bass gear. JK Well done!

Spiky1's picture

arr c'mon

Cheers,,,,I'm hoping he's a good , all round, player by the time he's 19.... needs some maturity, but he only recently turned 15.

Fat man, fat bass.

15 !!!!!

There is some serious talent going on there. My son is 16 and plays guitar. I think for 16 he plays pretty well. He has no stage fright and quick hands, but your boy has really solid chops. My son is learning to solo, but has yet to take a solo on stage... his strong point is his chord knowledge.

Mine plays live every other week with a rocking HS band at our Church. He plays 2nd electric gutar, acoustic guitar and just did a weekend on bass. I asked if he wanted me to help him develop a skeleton for his bass lines, and to my dismay, he said "no" he wanted to do it himself. After his rehearsal on bass I asked how he did, and he said said he played a lot of root notes to lock with the drummer, and also did some small fills when they were appropriate. He said he can't play like me... Whew! However, the fact that he has a sense of locking with the drummer is a good start.

My guess it that we are similar. As our boys get older its great to have the connection with each other of playing music. A language that we understand together.

Again... kudos to your you son.. I really enjoyed the vid. Plus I love to read "Dad" moments on BP.

Dad moments

I reckon chord knowledge is where it's at for young guitarists, so he's on the right track coz so many kids dooodle aound on guitar too much without a good basis...... I love "dad moments" on bp too, I'm full of them, hahaha, '3 heart attacks and a stroke' is a particularly beautiful one.

Fat man, fat bass.

dayum......

i am 46 (as of today) and been playing for over 35 years and i wished i had half the chops he has....you got a talented kid there.....glad your supporting him

I Can Help

Again B#, I can help. Instead of shipping your old rig to NC; I'll come to your place and slap you until I save your life. I have a pickup, so once I save you, I can bring the gear back myself.

Man I'm on a roll figuring out ways to help you today :)

What would I do without friends like you? LOL

Of course, with gas prices the way they are it would be less expensive to visit the Guitar Center!

Massive weekend.

At the risk of boring everybody silly and making you all nauseous, I have got a bit more proud Dad stuff.
My son auditioned for big band and jazz ensembles at the Conservatorium of Music. He played a very up-tempo version of "Jumpin' East of Java" on the Double Bass, and then the auditioners put him under the grill with a bunch of theory tests on modes, scales and arpeggios. He got 100% correct and the auditioners mentioned that they were impressed by the performance too.

Then today he played with his school's stage band in the final of the most prestigious and important competition in our area. It was the first time that a public school has EVER won! It was huge! People were crying and stuff. Big weekend.

Fat man, fat bass.

Sniff :)

Very cool Spiky. He's 15 and understands modes and I'm 52 and pretend I understand modes. ;) He seems very talented. Cool to be a proud Dad!

That's great, Spiky. Your son's a really talented kid. You've gotta be proud. And you're not making us sick with it. I'm sure I'll soon be making you all sick with stories about the musical education of my own (soon-to-be-here) son.

Man, that felt weird to say.

Every father I've met tells me this. :) What's really scary is, I get by on pretty little sleep as it is. So I suspect I'll just be a walking zombie the first few months. I might as well get a Starbucks frequent flier card or something. I don't think my Diet Coke is going to cut it.

You will Wheat

Once you become a father, according to the wisdom of Pete Wallace, you truly lose any selfishness you may have... it's an amazing transformation. AND, you will talk about your son A LOT... and that's a good thing.

Thanks for sharing the wisdom, Pete. It's fortunate for me that our little community has quite a few dads. Very few of my close friends have children. So it'll be good to have a group with which to compare notes and solicit advice. Maybe we need a new forum. :)

Audition results.

The postman came today with a highly anticipated envelope from the Conservatorium.

Jasper got accepted into EVERY group that he auditioned for. Symphony Orchestra, String Ensemble (full scholarship), Big Band, Jazz Ensemble.

The Big Band and Jazz Ensemble only accept one bassist each, this means he scored highest, wow.

We live 2 hours away from the University, so he can only accept one position...... which one???, Jasper wants to play jazz, but I am encouraging him to go for the Symphony Orchestra, because it is a very prestigious offer.

:)

A big congrats to Jasper on

A big congrats to Jasper on his audition successes. It sounds like he has some tough choices there. All the offers sound good.

Congratulate Your Son for BP

WOW... terrific. I'd want to for for jazz too, but, that's because our symphony here doesn't pay well and is always having money trouble. I know a couple of people who play with the symphony and they both have other jobs.

Whatever you all decide, it's remarkable.

Pete

Spiky1's picture

Symphony

The Pre-Tertiary Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra is not a professional outfit, it is for teaching (rehearsals once a week and about a dozen performances a year), we have to actually pay for him to join rather than him getting paid.

They play beautifully though, and they only consider young musicians of the "highest calibre". Also it feeds directly into the Con which is one of the most well - respected in the country.

You know its really hard for me to believe that your son is only in Junior High based on his bass skills. Brag Skiky... Brag ;)
