Reducing Noise When You Record: Laptop Users, This Is For You.

BoH's picture

As some of you might remember, I was very down on the Lightsnake about a year ago because I was experiencing some noise during recording. Then, I thought it might just be the amp I was using to monitor. Well, it was neither.

The problem was my laptop. Apparently, leaving the laptop connected to AC power was causing all of the noise. My solution was simple: unhook the AC power and allow the unit to run on battery power for my recording session. It solved the problem and I can now enjoy almost no noise whatsoever.

So perhaps if you are experiencing a BIG noise problem when using your laptop, try letting it run on the battery during your recording session and see if that helps.

That's a good idea, Bo.

That's a good idea, Bo. I'll have to try that out.

With my setup, the hum eliminator circuit in GearBox takes care of most things, but I've noticed that, even with it engaged, I can get hum if I'm sitting in front of my laptop with my pickups facing the laptop. If I pivot my bass to the right about 45 degrees, it goes away. But turning more toward the left (i.e. toward my MIDI keyboard and the UX2A itself) tends to create hum. I'm not sure which component is involved, since I've found a solution. I suspect it's the laptop itself that's the problem (it has a very loud fan. Maybe the passive pickups on my Fender are picking it up). Or it could be the monitor itself.

But I've heard of people having similar problems with stomp boxes: if running them on AC causes hum, try running them on batteries.

The only problem with

The only problem with running on battery power is the battery running out. However, that is only a minor inconvenience because I can recharge and get back to it later.

That's interesting Bo. My lappy is good. No noise problems that I can hear but I had a cable signal booster installed by our local cable company a while back. It was powered by a wall transformer. Well after they installed it I had noise on all my audio equipment. They didn't believe me until I had a technician come out and I showed him how the noise disappeared when I unplugged the booster. They finally had to install a new cable. It just goes to show how difficult it can be to find the source of audio noise.
