Wow, this bass has the best tone I have ever come accross, it is a 4 string , active through neck beast made from mahogany and rosewood. It cost $300 second hand, but sounds and feels like a boutique bass! I am in Luurrrvvee.
The pickups are 'no-name' humbuckers, but jeez they pump'n'growl. Harmonics ring clearly, and popping, thumping and fingerstyle are all great. Tapping notes are really well defined, this Ashton AB1100 is a super-versatile instrument. It looks good and feels extremely comfortable. Wity a name like Ashton attached to it , it is obviously not one for the gear snobs, but it goes to show that normally below average companies can produce real winners occasionally.
It's a pity they don't make these things any more.
Cool to see you around these
Cool to see you around these parts, Spiky1. I surfed Google to try to find some pics, but I wasn't sure I had the right model. I'm always hip to good, inexpensive gear. I'll have to keep an eye open for one of these.

Sounds like you've got yourself a keeper!
You never know when you're going to come across some hidden treasure.
I found a couple of reviews of Ashton guitars and basses, it seems they were well made, affordable instruments - something we always need more of.

Ashtons
The vast majority of instruments made by Ashton should be avoided like the plague, trust me, they are mostly awful. But in earlier times they put out a few goodies. A guy told me that the AB1100 was "over-manufactured" and Ashton weren't really making a profit on them.

New strings
I want to put new strings on this thing ( though the old ones sound great so far).
Any suggestions for good XL strings for wooten style tapping and double thumping techniques?
