help

I'll introduce myself first, I'm mark from a band called gauge and new to this site.
I recently bought a fender jaguar bass and I'm having a little problem with the set up.
The problem that I am having is that the E string has too much bassiness. I can adjust the tone of the instrument but this will make the rest of the strings too weak. I think it's nothing major but has anyone got any suggestions on what may be the cause as I never had this problem with my p bass.

Cheers

Hey Mark, welcome to BP. My

Hey Mark, welcome to BP.

My first thought would be to bypass the actives by switching over to passive. That would be the most simple solution. If that doesn't work, then you might be able to work out some EQ tricks. That's one thing I noticed about the Jag--it has a really strong low-end. Perhaps you could back off on the bass frequencies a bit. That may only work if you have more than a three knob EQ section, though.

Those Jags have a CRAZY loud

Those Jags have a CRAZY loud low end. I played one the other day and although I'm not a Fender girl, if I ever decide to get an active bass, that'll be the one I'll get. The guys at Guitar Center made me turn it down as soon as I started playing it. It's insane.

Another possibility is to

Another possibility is to lower the pickup under the E string. If the pole pieces are adjustable just turn them in a little under the E string otherwise tighten the screw on the E string side to tilt the pup a little.

Mark, Welcome to the site.

Mark,

Welcome to the site. If the pole-pieces of the pickups aren't adjustable (mine aren't), you can still adjust the overall height of the pickup via the mounting screws. Tighten the side nearest the E string a turn or two. Also check the EQ on your bass and on your amp.

As mentioned, I would check

When you say "bassiness", do you mean it is sounding muddy and unclear or just a whole hell of a lot of rumble?

As mentioned, I would check the height of the p/up under the E since that would be the easiest thing to check and adjust.

Also, maybe a lighter gauge E string might help.

When you say adjust the tone, are you speaking about only doing so with the on-board adjustments or also the setting on the amp?

I was going to also suggest it may be yer cab but I see you are running a 2x10 so that should not be the prob.

Final question, do you get to much "bassiness" everywhere or is it only at cretin locations?

And finally, welcome to BP.

Cheers for all that, think I

Cheers for all that, think I shall try the pickups first, the set up was all over the place when I got it. Thats what I thought it might be but I thought I'd ask in case anyone had had the same problem.
It's just a hell of a lot of rumble, if it were all the strings it wouldn't matter too much because I could just roll some bass off.

Cheers all, hope I get it sorted soon before I admit defeat and take it to a techie.

Now that I reread what I

Now that I reread what I wrote, when I said locations I should have said venue because it could just be the acoustics of the room unless you have used other basses there without the same problem.

Another thought, have you tried the bass through different amps/cabs or just what you have? I would give it a go through some other setups, even yer guitarist rig, and see what happens.

By the way, I check out yer tunes. Very cool. The first one that plays on ter page seems to have a very strong Metallica feel to it.

Thanks

Thanks for that, kind words always go down well.
On close inspection, the back pickup does seem to slope slighty towards the e string so it may will be that. Havn't had chance to give it a blast yet but I'm hoping that that sorts it out.
