List your other hobbies.

Paul Warren's picture

Let's hear what other hobbies you all enjoy. For me the partial list would look like this.

Astronomy: I have a pair of 25x70 binoculars that I use periodically to stargaze. I'd love a quality 8 to 12 inch Schmidt/Cassagrain reflector telescope with a CCD interface but it would be pretty useless where I live since even the few clear nights we get are light polluted. But maybe one day.....

Computer programming: I write my own software for many different applications. It's fun in the way a Rubicks cube is to some people; aggravating but rewarding at the same time.

Math: I like to solve everyday physical problems using math. Ok, I'm a geek.

Building things: I say things because I build all kinds of odd and unusual items. I used to love 'Junkyard Wars' before american TV ruined the show. That should give you some idea of my mind set when it comes to building. My pride and joy is the half scale hydroplane you can see on my home page. It has a weed whacker converted to an outboard motor.

So what are your hobbies?

- Bird watching

- Horseback riding/training (although I haven't done it in several years...not from lack of interest; more like lack of funds)
- Aquiring different stringed instruments and attempting to play them (next one on the list is a flying V uke)
- Reading (Mostly fiction...I'm running out of books so it's anything I can get my hands on at this point)
- Exploring public transportation methods
- Perfecting the "snub" when random men on said public transportation (or driving past me in their cars) start trying to talk to me (why these fellas would even think that I'd be interested, I don't know)
- Astrology & Palmistry
- Beer drinking (I've almost got it down...practice makes perfect)
- Flirting with the boys (always a fun and rewarding experience)
- Watching live music at my two second homes (Oasis and Rebar) whilst perfecting the fine art of beer drinking

I like to invent things, build things. Like right now.... I have this coin-operated basket ball game I came up with called "Hood Hoops". I was going to build it for an amusement park I had but it closed. Now I just got a location in the hood so it's back on list of things to do. But, I have all kinds of stuff.... solar heating panels, wind energy idea's, so many things so little time. I'm real big on Earth friendly ideas.... so when I'm dead my kid can say "My Dad tried to do something about it, but he just kept saying people are idiots".....LOL!

Reading is pretty high on the list. I mostly lean toward classics and literary fiction, but I also enjoy philosophy, history, and just various other genres once in a while. I watch quite a lot of films and TV on DVD (thank you, Netflix). Like you, Paul, I enjoy computer programming (mostly PHP, but I've vowed to learn Ruby and the Rails framework before the summer is out).

I like hiking and camping, but I haven't done much of either in a while.

Clearance diving

Yes hazz, I has 18 years as a Royal Navy clearance diver. I have never been as fit as those days. lol. There are still a great number of mines in the North Sea, and English Channel, that haven't been swept . Most have buried themselves under the sand/mud. Big area off the mouth of the River Somme on the French coast where ships still are not allowed to drop anchor for example. UK, Germany, France have active mine clearance groups. I served with SDU2 mainly which is based in Portsmouth and deals with the Southern are of UK generally.

Most mines found today are ground influence mines and usually caught in fishing trawls. In my day it was just of using sonar to detect it, a submersible TV camera to investigate and ascertain the type, then a diver to place 4 or 5 pound of PX charge next to a primer and a 4 or 5 minute fuse. Then get out of the water [silly to forget that bit, unless you wish to experience what a human atom feels like. lol] and watch the splash. They make quite a nice splash.

Boring Guy

Here goes:

Scuba Diving
Motorcycles
Water skiing
Home Repair

Lupus Foundation Volunteering

Due to Lupus and chronic pain issues the following hobbies are long gone:

Jogging
Walking
Weight Lifting
Swimming (50 miles per summer)
Climbing
Ski Diving
Boxing
almost all serious physical activity.

Nothing boring about Pete,

Nothing boring about that Pete, compared to you I look like a freakin garden gnome.

What could you lift with your Weight Lifting?

:^)
What could you lift with your Weight Lifting
Well I lifted different weights depending on the muscle group I was working on... Every once in a while I would see how much I could bench press one time... I was working out with about 20 pounds over my body weight on the bench which was about 175 pounds. My best bench press, before my double-hernia operation :^( was 280 pounds and I weighed 155 at the time.

I looked very fit for a guy in his early 40's. First problem I had was I injured my back moving a bar with no weight on it Duh!... next came a double-hernia operation. My doctor found the hernia during a routine exam. Finally Lupus put a complete end to my weight lifting hobby... I really missed it for a long time. I had more energy at 43 then I had at 23. Now I'm 51 and I use all of my free weights to add weight to the back of my truck when it snows :)

Pete

Wow!! 280 pounds, I don't

I rode a Harley for the FIRST TIME EVER on Sunday. It was so much fun! Not only was it my first ride on a Harley, it was my first time riding a motorcycle. I want one now. I am going to have to win the lottery. Not that the odds are very good in the first place, but it will be especially difficult to win since I don't play the lottery.

-Ann-

Not Expensive

If you stay clear of Harleys you can buy a very nice used V-Twin for a reasonable amount. I sold a bike on Craigslist recently. Where I live there are usually 10 to 12 bikes for sale everyday on CL.

I jusy bought this mini-bike in February.

I had my last bike for 12 years and always planned to buy a Harley when the time was right. I have little Harley models in my office. When the time was right I sold my Honda on Craigslist and went straight to the Harley dealer where I had major sticker shock.

I then checked out Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki and even Triumph. The Suzuki Boulevard ended up giving me the best bang for the buck.

You can have a much cheaper mid-life crisis than Harley. However, I will eventually go the Harley route.

Nothing against any of those

Nothing against any of those other bikes, but I'm a total sucker for the Harley's. I may buy used (not that it matters much, as they tend to appreciate in value), or I may just bite the bullet and buy one. I'm going to start holing away my teaching money. I should have a good hunk of it together before the big four oh.

I'm not digging the 2007s, though (that's a 2003 above).

According to my old log, the top one was 1500lb explosive - It reads

Type: German LMB [RN designation GC type]
Known Info: Magnetic/acoustic mine. After 1944 some were fitted with pressure/acoustic triggers as well. They weighed just over 2100 lbs with a 1,554 lbs. charge of S16.

My memory can't remember percentages but S16 was a German explosive consisting of a mixture of ammonium nitrate, ethylene diamine dinitrate, cyclonite, sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate, less than 1% of TNT plus aluminum and some other things. It made TNT seem like play dough. We used mainly Torpex and Amatol

Situation: It was situated in the Solent, off the Isle of White.
Lat Long: unreadable -its faded
Dive details:
Date: 7th March 1973
Max depth: 80ft
Dive time: 37 mins.
Bottom time 19 mins.
Other: UXO reached at 1324hrs. 4lbs PX laid adjacent Magnetic primer. 4.5 minute fuse.
Rendered safe.

The bottom pic: a bit bigger -2000lb.

TMC type [RN designation GN] which was/is a ground mine with influence fuzing introduced in 1940. They were a bigger variety of a TMB. Available fuzes included acoustic and acoustic/magnetic after 1942. Charge was 1,896-2,050 lbs. and could be laid in waters up to 20 fathoms (37 m) deep.

They have been known to blow hole through 4" armour plate 150ft above it, big enough to drive a double decker bus through, so you normally manage to catch a few fish.

Fishing is great. I used to

Fishing is great. I used to fish in the ocean a lot but lately I go trout fishing with my wife a couple of times a year.

Other hobbies: - Ships, and

Other hobbies:
- Ships, and everything that makes them tick. My job as a marine engineer demands that I know a little bit about a lot of things (we are generalists, not specialists). :-)

- This might sound strange, but CAD (Computer Aided Design) is somewhat of a hobby for me. I used various CAD programs during my college years, and I have recently picked up SolidWorks again (it was always my favorite). It's a great help at work to be able to draw up some parts if we need to make or modify something. Pretty rewarding as well.

- Skiing, mainly Telemark (a.k.a. Free Heel Skiing). Look it up at wikipedia if you don't know what I'm talking about. LOL!

- Working on my car. It's an old Nissan Primera (Infiniti G20 for you yanks), and there's always something that can be fixed/tweaked/improved on it.

That's about it...

Paul Warren's picture

Hi Thor. I really enjoy

Hi Thor. I really enjoy working with CAD as well. I use it for a lot of things but one of the most useful is rapid prototyping. I draw the item I'm interested in and then print it to scale. I glue the printout to cardboard and then cut out the part. The cardboard parts can be assembled and checked for fit and function before cutting the actual part. Saves a lot of time and effort. I'd love to get one of those 3D rapid prototyping 'printers' that make the part from plaster.

Rapid prototyping is way

Rapid prototyping is way cool! I've seen some demos on the 3D printers that use plaster layers, and they produce some amazing results. You can even get it to print movable parts, for example an adjustable wrench. There is research going on here in Norway on a 3D printer that uses metal for the layers. If they get it working, you can print parts in any metal alloy you want. How cool is that!?

Paul Warren's picture

The plaster technology is

The plaster technology is great because you can take the plaster parts and use them for casting or vacuum forming. If they can get the technique working directly in metal alloys then you could make parts directly.

It's an amazing 'sci-fi' technology. I wish someone would make inexpensive home-use versions. With a low enough price they'd sell millions of units to hobbists world wide.
