Well, for Moms Day the Princess and I are rebuilding a cabinet for mum that she wants to use in the yard.
So this morning our daughter came into the shop with me to help out. Since we are taking it apart so we can sand everything down for painting I let her, the Princess, use the cordless screwdriver which she did very well with for her first time and then I let her use the orbital palm sander which again she did a superb job with. The one thing she is really looking forward to is painting. Now that will be fun. ;)
What she really wants to learn to use is the miter saw and table saw. When I told her she will learn to use those when she is a bit older she got all excited and wanted to know what she could "chop" up. ;)

Sounds like fun H, Mummy
Sounds like fun H, Mummy should be happy with that.

Yeah, mum should be happy
Yeah, mum should be happy and with all the little paintings our daughter will put on it (our son will as well) she should like the final product.

So what's the cabinet for?
So what's the cabinet for?
The Mrs is going to use it
The Mrs is going to use it for her gardening tools and some of the toys the kids use in the yard. I was going to get her a new one but this specific cabinet was one her mom built during WWII so she wanted to keep it. It is about 62+ years old but only needs a new finish since the wood is in pretty good shape.

It must have been made well
It must have been made well to last that long.
Nothing like spending
Nothing like spending quality time with the kids.
I've gotten accustomed to having my son hang over my shoulder when I'm working around the house (I'm thinking of getting him his own tool belt for his birthday) and my daughter is taking an interest too. Time to buy some more safety glasses methinks!

So true B#
It's fun, when ever I go into the shop or reach into the tool drawer in the kitchen they both come runnin' to find out what "WE" will be working on. :)
The little guy tries to help out as well but being 1 1/2 yrs old he mainly hands us the tools for now.

I don't think they HAD safety glasses when I was a kid. How did we make it this far Brian? LOL!
When I was growing up the
When I was growing up the best eye protection we had was being able to close yer eye lids before the debris got to the eye. ;)

It was always a good time when grinding some sort of metal and one of the hot chips hit the eye ball. ;) Talk about pain.

I remember helping to cut
I remember helping to cut firewood at a cottage years ago. I was operating the chainsaw and got a wood chip in the eye so I passed the chainsaw to my friend and started stacking the wood while he cut. The hot muffler blew off the chainsaw and actually stuck to my bare chest. That hurt. I had an image of the muffler scorched on my chest for a couple of weeks. Safety gear is for pansies. LOL
Sounds like you were not
Sounds like you were not meant to chop any wood that day. ;)

Isn't it amazing
Isn't it amazing that any of us survived?
No safety glasses (even in shop class), no bike helments, no seatbelts in cars, peanut butter sanwiches for lunch, lunch taken to school in a brown paper bag and left in warm locker until luch time (maybe the bacteria made us stronger) and we played on the street unsupervised by our parents! (Oh yeah, and we made slingshots, had BB guns and made bows & arrows - we should all be blind! LOL)

Every day I have to explain
Every day I have to explain to my daughter why she is not allowed to ride in the bed of the truck like the dog does. Although when we are at the barn on private land I will let her ride in back and she and her brother love it. She has also driven the truck on the back roads as well.
She just came up to me the other day and asked, "Daddy, can I get a bow and you and I can go hunt coyotes and bears?" Needless to say she is getting her first bow and a pellet gun for her upcoming b-day. ;)

This thread got me thinking
This thread got me thinking about all the times in the shop with my dad. I spent a lot of time with him and learning about and how to use power tools. I once ground off the skin on the tip of my left index finger in that garage. I guess the grinder was just begging me to touch it. Good times.
I did develop a respect for power tools and learned how to use 'em. Safety glasses were optional though. Now I can impress the boys because I can tell the difference between a planer and a table saw. It doesn't take much. I can sometimes identify tools by their sound alone. That really came in handy when I was dating the cabinet maker/guitar player (hmmm...I wonder where he's been hiding lately. I think I'll give him a call tonight and maybe we can discuss large wood working equimpent and how nice it would be to have some new bookshelves and perhaps a new headboard. Or maybe it's too soon for that kind of commitment. But I'm not above dropping hints).

Wow!
Actually, I have nothing to add to this thread. I just needed the points to pass Ann... now back to your regular program.
