I gotta say, finding folks to jam with is a pain in the butt. I have been checking out the adds for bassist and jam sessions and the majority of them state "No older then 25" or they just want to jam out to Death Metal/thrash type stuff. I do not mind playing those styles and I even listen to some but I do not want to ONLY play that. I am also finding a lot of add for bassist that start out sounding good but then the adds get in to, ". . . we're down with the 420, drinkin', partyin' are a@@es off and kicking' f'n a@@, etc etc etc . . ." and they give the impression that they are 12yr olds after that. Kinda like Dave HAha!! (don't take that to harshly Dave.);^P If you have looked through the adds you will know what I am saying.
The adds I am finding appealing are all 40mi or more away and I really do not want to travel that far just to jam.
The search continues.

Try Craigslist
I posted on Craigslist that I was a 51 year old bass player looking for other musicians to jam. I got a lot of responses and two requests to audition for bands.

That is where I am finding
That is where I am finding most of the adds. I found one guy who lives very close and a few years older then I who wants to play straight forward rock with some harder stuff tossed in so I am waiting to hear back from him.
I stopped looking at the boards in the shops because they are filled with the teenage kids looking for that thrash bassist.

Just an update (thinkin' out loud)
I heard back from a guy who live just couple miles from here who is 43 and lookin' to play some straight forward rock. He is also trying to set up a "music circle" at the local park. I assume that means he wants to get some players together for some outdoor concerts. So I am now waiting to here his plans on that.
Now I need to make some time to get away for a bit. ;^D

Not that bad
You should try living in a mining town of 17000 that is an 8 hour drive away from the nearest city. I know 3 guitarists, one bassist and one drummer. The music shop shares the same space as a beauty salon and carries one bass, two acoustic guitars and three electric guitars. There is one bar that has live bands, but I would only go there if I was built like Hulk Hogan. My only way to get what I want, musically is over the internet and on this fine site. At least I'm developing my own style. ; )

I'll tell you a funny
I'll tell you a funny story:
I remember going for an audition for a band about 5 years ago and when I got there I asked what style they play, they told me it was a metal band, I was disappointed but I gave it a go anyway, thought it could be a laugh.
We played 3 or 4 of their songs and then I thought to myself, I’m going to try something and see if they notice, so right in the middle of the last song I purposely went into the wrong key and played whatever I wanted, It was sooooo funny, they didn't notice at all. When we finished the song they told me that I was the best bass player they had played with and asked me to join the band, I said I would get back to them.
Now THAT'S funny Jaymie.
Now THAT'S funny Jaymie. They were probably so caught up in their own screaming licks they didn't even hear you at all. You should have taken the position. You could have had fun on stage playing completely off key. I wonder if any of the audience would notice either.
That is funny Jaymie. Well
That is funny Jaymie.
Well J, if you think about it, the drummer was probably a bit tone def and a bit fast as well as trying to use fills for the entire song. The guitarist was in his own world imagining he was some sort of shred god and the singer was screaming so loud he could not hear anything but him self.
Then you walk in and ONLY messed up on one tune, which they did not even notice (you were probably the only one to audition for them anyways)

Yea I think you've got it right, but I'm sure they didn't notice me playing wrong because before I did it, I made sure to watch them for any reaction, there was nothing at all.

A couple miles to the east of my City is a place named Gastonia... Fred Durst is their most famous son...lol They are proud of him.
I rode my motorcycle down Hwy 74 last weekend and went through the town of Marshville. As you hit the town limit there is a sign that says Marshville - Home of Randy Travis. I'm telling you, I didn't see anything in that little town... except a liquor store... I wonder where everyone there works.
It's the same up here. I've
It's the same up here. I've checked the bulliten boards at my local music stores for possible bands and they all seem to want bassists under the age of about 30. One even said something like 'no old folks over 25'. Can you believe it?
I've missed the age cut off?
I've missed the age cut off? I can't believe it! By almost two years. That makes me one of those old folks, I guess. Well those kids don't know what they're missing. They're too young to know what it takes to be in a band anyway.
I've never encountered an age discrimination in the bands in my area...the age range seems to be 23-40-something, believe it or not. This goes for both orginal and cover bands. In my last band the members ranged from 25-31. In one of my favorite local bands, the youngest guy is 29. The other two are 32 (and a day apart in age).

Actuaaly everyone thinks
Actuaaly everyone thinks we're Heavier than we are.... the heaviest we get is Maiden and Priest. Our CD is more Rock than Metal.
But, enough about me....LOL!..... Hazz sometimes it can take a great deal of time to find guys. The right guys anyway as you can be jamming this weekend with the wrong guys. Hang in there Bro, you'll find them.
Dave
The biggest problem, well
The biggest problem, well second biggest, I have found a few bands looking for bassist to tour with them but I am not in a place in time I can do that. I just want to jam and maybe play out once a month or so.
That is what will be cool if this guy gets the park gig going. I will be able to jam with some cool players AND get out there and play publicly although that may incite a riot. ;^D It would be my first time playing to a crowd other then the drunken/stoned after parties and such we would jam at when we were teenagers many many moons ago.

Update: getting closer
I just heard back again from the guy who is local to me. He will be playing out at the park on weekends and it will just be a big jam session behind the police station (cops are pretty cool to the locals here). He wants to set it up so the entire "group" plays rhythm while one person takes lead, then the next person will take lead and so forth working around the circle.
Now I need to go get that combo and the acoustic I have been "needing" so I do not have to load up the "rig" all the time. It would be a good place to test out the BFD I am building though.
One more MAJOR project on the house and I will have the time. Ohyeah!!
