Simple double-thump riff (so I don't forget it)

wheat's picture

Why not share some riffs? I came up with this one this morning while practicing a bit. I'm going to share it here so I don't forget it. There are two versions:

-------14--------12------------------------
--------------------------14--------12-----
-------------------------------------------
-12-12-----12-12----12-12-----12-12--------

The "12 12" patterns on the E string are double-thump (thumb) slaps: the first down, the second up. Everything on the higher strings is popped. Play it as straight tripplets. The Root is on the E string. This pattern uses the R (E), 4th (D), b3 (C), and b7 (G). So it would work over any minor or minor 7th chord (Em, Em7, etc.).

Here's a slight variation that will work over any dominant seventh chord (in this example, E7).

-------14--------13------------------------
--------------------------14--------12-----
-------------------------------------------
-12-12-----12-12----12-12-----12-12--------

The one above substitutes the major 3rd for the minor third. So it has a major third but still a flat 7th.

I didn't think of this one at the time, but if you needed one to fit over a major or major 7th chord, this should work (though I haven't actually tried it yet):

-------14--------13------------------------
--------------------------14--------13-----
-------------------------------------------
-12-12-----12-12----12-12-----12-12--------

Have fun with it,

Wheat

About posting TAB

Remember that the TabMaker is handy for helping create tabs, though you can also do them by hand. Wrapping your tabs in <code></code> tags will force them into the monspaced, typewriter-style font (so they line up correctly). The preview button is your friend!

It's easier if you create or paste the tab in first and then wrap it, as the wrapping tabs make it look funny, but will also make it look good when you preview.

This:

<code>-------14--------13------------------------
--------------------------14--------13-----
-------------------------------------------
-12-12-----12-12----12-12-----12-12--------</code>

Turns into this:

-------14--------13------------------------
--------------------------14--------13-----
-------------------------------------------
-12-12-----12-12----12-12-----12-12--------

Cool

Thanks for the riffs and the explanation on how to format tabs on BP.

Here's one of my favs...

It really cooks when slapped, but I suppose you could fingerstyle it as well.

---------------------------------------------
--------------3---h5----------------3--x3--5-
----------------------3---h5-----------------
------3--------------------------------------

h=hammer-on

x=ghost note (percussive)

I came up with this groove at a band rehearsal one day just goofing off. While doing it, the drummer started grooving along with me and the keyboardist and guitarist joined up a few seconds later. It turned into a killer funk-fest for a few minutes until we all got back to business. Lots of fun, this one.

Please be aware that my counting skills in regards to writing aren't that good so you will have to come up with your own flow for this...sorry...

Have a good time and make it funky!
