Ok guys, I need your thoughts please....
I'm in search of my 1st bass amp. I'm thinking around 30 watts (?) but, I'm open to suggestions. Here's my needs:
1. Small in size: I have a small car (convertible), so I'm not able to carry around a stack.
2. Clean, clear solid sound. No distortion, buzzing or humming at high levels.
3. Budget: $200-300
4. Don't really need it for gigging, per se, but maybe small gigs.
Here's some brands that I've looked at:
Roland Cube
Line 6 (Low Down)
Marshall
Warwick
Acoustic
I would appreciate feedback from the professionals, please...
Thanks!
Sean
Honestly Sean I don't think
Honestly Sean I don't think you are going to get high levels with no distortion, buzzing or humming at only 30 watts. Maybe if you stick to practicing in your bedroom that will be enough power. But the first time you try to play with a guitar player with 50w or a real drummer you won't even hear yourself.
Two things to keep in mind 1)bass takes lots more energy than other instruments. 2)to make bass notes you have to move lots of air.
So 1)more power is better and 2)bigger drivers are better. You can have lots of small speakers instead of one big speaker but the idea is to move lots of air.

If you plan on playing with
If you plan on playing with others then I would suggest looking for a good used combo. Keep your eyes open and try your best to stay local, that way you can give 'er a test drive before buying.
If it will be a stay at home practice amp then go test what you listed (if you can) and hear which one you like the sound of. The quality will be about the same but the tones from each will differ slightly.
A cheep bass can be made up for with good playing and a decent amp. A cheep amp will just sound cheep. ;)
My practice amp in an old EDEN Nemesis I bought for 150$. A single 12" driver, puts out a decent 200w and sounds pretty clear when turned up, will fit in the trunk of a small compact car with room to spare and yes, it can be heard nicely when accompanied by a drummer and guitarist although it will not knock any walls down.
With the way people are needing money these days it should not be to hard to find a decent used combo from any of the manufactures in your price range.

My very first amp was a 40 watt amp. I outgrew that thing before I even had a chance to spill a beer on it. A 30 watter is just going to be throwing money away. You'll be buying something with more power in no time. Headroom is a funny thing. It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

And when Dave walks in a room he needs all the "headroom" he can get. Sometimes he can't even get through the door. ;)
Whats up Dave?

My first amp was a 150W VT head on a 4x10. I traded it in for a Traynor 25W combo 'cause the VT kept getting me evicted. I still have the Traynor. I've spilled LOTS of beer on that sucker.
They HAVE to have some beer
They HAVE to have some beer spilled on them or they are never TRULY a bass amp!

Last time I had wiskey (Scotch) I quit drinking and haven't touched it since... That was 18+ years ago now!
That must have been some
That must have been some night!

Dave
hehe
Well, I learned I'm a very depressing drunk, that I like Scotch WAY too much and that I get very grumpy when people won't let me watch TV when I'm drunk. The 4 hours of throwing up half a bottle of the stuff didn't improve the night much either.
4 hours of throwing up would
4 hours of throwing up would depress me too! : )
Lucky for me I'm a happy drunk and stay within my limits. Of course my limit is 12 Heinekens. I stay away from the hard stuff.... it's like drinking liquid anger for me. Hooking up with a woman while drinking Jack Daniels was never a good idea either. I just hated them! I wasn't trying to please them I was trying to murder them with my penis...LOL! But, I digress....

hehe,
I was depressing before I started throwing up, the throwing up actually improved my disposition, or at least so I'm told.

That's because all the self pity you were spewing was silenced by the spewing of the contents of your stomach. ;)
Last time I threw up that long was the first time I ever got drunk, have not touch a sip of Vodka since, this was back in '85.
I also learned a long time ago I am a very happy yet smartasstick (yeah, it's a new word;P) drunk with a loud mouth.
These days it is an occasional beer to drink and my cabs do not have beer/alcohol stains but rather baby formula and juice. ;)
To the original OP, no matter the cab or combo you get, spill your alcohol on it. ;)

You'll be fine..... once you
You'll be fine..... once you start giggin' some drunk will spill one on it for you. He'll be sluring something along the lines of how great you are, or how great some other bass player is. Next thing you know you'll have a bass amp. Then he will try to clean it off with his T-shirt and spill more on your shoe. Then as you are backing him off the stage area he will trip over a monitor cord and go ass over elbows. But, it's all OK.... the bar will serve him another one, and he will be back to chat with you on your next break. That's been my experience anyway.

Dave
I have two bass amps: Peavey
I have two bass amps:
Peavey Microbass (link). That's a tiny, highly portable 20watt RMS combo practice amp with 1x8" speaker. The back is closed, so it has a deeper sound than you might expect. It's fine for private practice and for jamming along with acoustic instruments. It can't compete with a drum kit.
They don't make it any more, but they do make the Peavey Max 110 (20watts, 1x10), which is close to the same thing (plus a few modern extras), as well as the Peavey Max 112 (40watts, 1x12), and the Peavey Max 115 (60watts, 1x15).
That Roland Cube you mention is comparable. It's a nice practice amp, and loud enough for something small and acoustic.
Any of those would make a fine first amp. But even the largest of them will have a hard time up against a drum kit. If there are down-tuned, distorted guitars in the mix, forget about it. You'll need 100watts, at a minimum, to cut through. And 200watts is even nicer. For that, I bring out the big guns:
My other amp is a Yorkville 400B, which is almost identical to the BM400, which was a later redesign of it. It's 400watts into 1x15". It can drive an external cab, too. It was around $800 new. They don't make that one anymore either. Yorkville revived the Traynor brand for all its musical instrument amps, including a nice line of bass amps. Their stuff is solid, loud, and built to last. They have amps at every price point. They're made in Canada, which makes them fairly rare in the US (I haven't checked your profile to see where you're from).
I like SWR and GK quite a bit, but I can't recommend a recent model. You'd just have to try 'em out. The WorkingPro line looks good to me, but they're beyond your price range. You might check out the SWR LA series. Those are more affordable, and come in a 10" (35watt), a 12" (60watt), and a 15"(100watt). That top one, the LA15, is $350 and might be a good starter that can keep up with a kit.
Best of luck. Let us know what you end up with.
