Hello fellow thumpstickr's iv''e been wondering about converting my p bass from fretted to well, the oppisite, in the long run, should i get a new neck, or just hold out and buy a frettless? any thoughts welcome.
Save up for a second bass. When I first switched to a fretless I thought, "Hell, this feels so good and sounds so great I should sell my other bass."
A few weeks later I found my self pulling the fretted bass out for a tune that I could not quite get the right tone out of the fretless without changing strings.

Definitely keep a fretted around. I really got into the fretless for a little while, but I only pull it out on occasion now--more like an effect when I want a particular sound. You might jump in and never look back, but that wasn't my experience.
If you want a decent fretless on the cheap, Squier makes a very nice lined fretless jazz bass that's sort of an ultra-cheep ($300) knock off of Fender's Jaco Pastorious signature model. It's an insanely nice bass for the money.
Good plan! My fretless is also my backup bass (it's identical to my fretted except for color and, well, you know, the lack of frets and all). And that makes things pretty interesting when you break a string and have to switch to playing a song on fretless that you've maybe never played on fretless before!
Jimi66 Hey Wheat, thanks for the link, i started playing on a 5 string up right so im kinda used to the non fretted sound, but i agree with you all about the 2nd bass, and appreciate the link
you could always....
