My daughter is now well beyond my skills. Today she picked up the root notes, plus some more, for the James Jamerson line in "What's Going On". There are no instructors in town here. What to do now?
You should give serious consideration to getting Band in a Box. BiaB can provide unlimited backing tracks for playing along with. There are hundreds of styles using midi and/or RealTracks and all the midi and some of the RealTracks have the charts in standard or tab notation.
It's a really great way of learning to play or improving your skills.
If you do consider getting BiaB I'd suggest you get the UltraPak even though a first time purchase is a bit expensive. It's worth it though as you get all the styles, RealTracks and RealDrums.
No probs Brian. She can check out some of the demos online and there's a free, time limited, download to try although I don't know if the download comes with RealTracks and RealDrums (it probably has a really limited set).
That's what she is doing right now, except without the sheets. We would have to order through Amazon for the music. She can read some music from some previous experience. I'll bring that up with her. Thanks for the help.

There's some good stuff on YouTube and a lot of instructional vids out there. If she's into Jamerson, there's a great book/CD (or DVD) out there for that: Standing in the Shadows of Motown.
(The movie is good, too, but it's not instructional. It's the story of Jamerson.)
I tell you what. The one thing I really wish I'd had when I was first getting serious is a looper of some sort (or software that does the same). Being able to set up changes and work over the top of them is really useful. Maybe one of those Tascam Bass Trainers would be nice? That can help her slow stuff down and work on portions she's trying to learn.
There's some good software out there that does the same sort of thing. It's called Transcribe! and it's from Seventh String software.
maybe try....
some instructional dvd's ......

As a relatively new bassist,
As a relatively new bassist, I did most of my learning by playing music to MP3s and chord sheets.
