Addition to my digital 'studio'

Paul Warren's picture

Hi guys. I just got one of these for my laptop. (echo Indigo io)

The onboard sound card was so bad I just had to replace it. The indigo card sounds absolutely great and it's loud enough, in combination with my headphone amp, to make my ears bleed. Now I can get my bass loud enough to really hear it above the accompaniment. I love it.

It also lets me record at up to 24 bit 96KHz if I so desired. I probably won't since almost all backing tracks are at 16,44 but it's nice to have the ability.

sweet......

alwasy nice to get new toys...

That it is! I can't believe

That it is!

I can't believe how bad the soundcard on the newer laptop was. My older IBM had a good card (crystal SoundFusion). Seems the newer you get the worse the periferals.

I know, right? I remember

I know, right? I remember learning this the hard way when I ordered a laptop a few years back. I'd previously ordered my wife a Dell 5150. So, when lightning took mine out, I ordered a Dell 5160. I glanced at the specs and assumed it would be just a tad nicer than my wife's (which they didn't make any more). It had a slightly faster processor, but it's display topped out at 1024x768. So they'd put a cheaper monitor in the model that replaced hers (which topped out at 1152 x864). Nice one, Dell! Thanks for that! You can't imagine how much I cussed that monitor over the three or four years that I used that laptop.

Yeah, I don't have anything

Yeah, I don't have anything bad to say about it. In fact the only complaint I've seen is that you can't pull the card from the slot while it's running. They warn you not to in the documentation and mention that it could cause damage to the card or the PC. Still, it seems some people do and then complain about it.

why ?

why would you need to pull it from the pc wen your using it ??

Given limited cardbus slots

Given limited cardbus slots some people would pull one card out to put another in. For example, when you're finished recording you might want an ethernet card in place of the sound card.

Anyway, whatever the reasoning, some people have done it since there are complaints out there.
