I am a beginner and have a quirky question... when i tune my bass i always use a tuner (Korg CA-30)... whenever i tune my E string to dead on E and then check it by playing my fifth fret A the A is always very Sharp... yet when i tune the other strings they are always dead on (D on the A string is always exactly D, etc)
is this normal? it seems as i move up the neck it shows each note as a little less sharp.... but my open E always shows exactly E, yet my G, A, B, etc are all sharp.... just curious why this is happening and also why only on the E string?
Intonation, Intonation, Intonation
You'll need to adjust your intonation on the E-string saddle so that each note up and down the neck is as accurate as possible. For more details, see Thor's set-up/maintainence article. I believe he covers intonation in that piece. If you feel like it, search the net for other articles on intonating your bass. If you aren't confident in doing this yourself, a music shop can do it for a reasonble fee.
